Work where you matter.** **A Brief Overview** The Registered Nurse in the Med Surg Unit is accountable for the safe, individualized, efficient, and effective management and delivery of nursing care for hospitalized inpatients and hospital-based outpatients. **What you will do** + Assumes other job duties as per RN licensure, training and scope of practice when floating to other areas of the medical center r/t established floating guidelines. + Demonstrates critical thinking by synthesizing best practice protocols and standards with patient data, to decide on the best course of action. + Demonstrates ability to identify and respond to changes in clinical condition, and provide timely communication to appropriate care team member, using SBAR format. + Includes patient and significant others in the plan of care including education needs from admission through discharge, evidenced by complete and accurate documentation, and use of appropriate interventions in accordance to hospital policies and evidenced based standards. + Actively participates in the learning experiences of orientees, co-workers, and students as assigned. + Takes ownership of professional development by staying current with professional practice standards; seeking learning opportunities in nursing specialty; and shares new learning (s), with peers formally and informally. + Engages in organizational initiatives and department operations by attending 50% department meetings, at least 1 Employee Forum annually, at least 1 Mission for Staff session annually, at least 1 volunteer experience annually, and other assigned in-services and meetings according to direction of nursing supervisor. + Consistently incorporates the nine guiding principles of safe medication administration, including the five rights of medication administration and in compliance with Avera MedSafe –Bar-coding medication administration. + Participates in quality improvement practices by following best practice standards for Core Measures and incorporating Appropriate Care Interventions into patient plan of care, evidenced by: consistent complete and accurate documentation and achieving quality outcomes appropriate to the clinical condition and needs of the patient across the continuum of care. + Interacts professionally with providers to coordinate care for patient across the continuum, not just the acute phase of care. + Ensures readiness of area for anticipated or unexpected emergency situations as evidenced by appropriate use of Rapid Response procedures, fulfilling assigned roles of code team, and appropriate follow though of safety policies + Participates in the development of the trauma program for the hospital evidenced by consistency in the following of the program guidelines defined by MDH Level III trauma designation. + Actively participates in a committee or project improvement team that enhances the patient experience, improves efficiency of workflow, increases employee satisfaction, or positively impacts the mission of the organization. Is familiar with EHR and attends trainings as assigned as well as being an IT resource for physicians in those EHR modules assigned by department leader. + Participates in interdisciplinary rounds with treatment team. + A Unit Charge Nurse is a registered nurse designated by Avera Marshall to have responsibility for care and coordination of care on a particular unit during a particular shift. + A Unit Charge Nurse Meets all of the essential functions of a staff nurse and may have patient assignment. + A Unit Charge Nurse Begins each shift with Daily Line-Up with enthusiasm-stand up, engaging group in questions for discussion, and concludes with prayer. + A Unit Charge Nurse Supports service excellence strategies by ensuring completion of hourly rounding, consistent use of AIDET, and other skills and expectations as defined by the department leader; evidenced by consistent and thorough documentation, and managing up organizational goals and initiatives to peers, patients, visitors, physicians, and community members. + A Unit Charge Nurse Considers factors related to safety, effectiveness, and cost in the planning and delivery of patient care when making assignments, for a specific unit during an assigned shift. + A Unit Charge Nurse Utilizes critical thinking and department staffing matrix to staff unit accordingly. + A Unit Charge Nurse Plans for meal breaks at the beginning of each shift, keeps shift report focused on pertinent patient information and on time, ensures OT is minimized, and assures team stays organized to hand off on or before the end of the assigned shift. – Any variances are to be detailed in writing with measures attempted to avoid overtime. + A Unit Charge Nurse Investigates incidents, patient complaints, and care issues and reports to nursing supervisor with suggestions for change/improvement. + A Unit Charge Nurse Reports all AHE and high risk situations to department leader, Assistant CNO, and/or CNO immediately. + A Unit Charge Nurse Ensure quality care is delivered on all shifts as assigned to Unit Charge role through regular interactions with Unit Charge RNs in each area, and as needed based on activity and needs of department for a given shift. **Essential Qualifications** The individual must be able to work the hours specified.
