Welcome to Canby, “The Gateway to the Prairie”. We are the westernmost city in Yellow Medicine County. We sit in the center of a broad-flat valley from which can be seen the Coteaux des Prairies in South Dakota. Canby is located at the junction of U.S. Highway 75 (The King of Trails) and State Highway 68. We invite you to visit our great community and take advantage of all we have to offer.

We offer excellent schools: elementary, high school, private and technical college; a quality health care system: hospital, nursing home, assisted living facilities, wellness center; inviting churches; and an abundance of recreational and leisure activities: hunting, fishing, golf, disc golf, shooting sports, swimming pool, bowling, movies, camping, sports and activities. Step back in history with a visit to the Lund-Hoel House.
Established in 1891 by John Lund of Lund’s Land Agency, it became the talk of the town. The main part of the house was completed in 49 days. In 1900, additional renovations included a surrounding “hardhead” (fieldstone) fence, additional living space, sleeping quarters, balconies, a turret, and porches. Although considered extravagant at the time, foolish by many, the House boasted a gas plant to light the house at night with original gas fixtures on display. The rooms were designed without continuity or harmony with many styles of millwork. All bedrooms except the last addition, had their own balcony. The “door above the door” in the upstairs hallway is always intriguing.
