This region is home to some of Minnesota’s great writers and artists. Find a folk art school in the middle of the prairie and take a class, attend a concert, play, or take part in other cultural events. You can explore the Minnesota River Valley by visiting historical sites, and reading stories. Discover the essence of our area through our history, culture, and art.

Meander Art Crawl

This award-winning art crawl is a free self-guided tour of artist studios featuring over 40 local artists from the Upper Minnesota River Valley. The Meander is a great “trip on a tank full” for those seeking authentic culture, history and scenic vistas. ​

Milan Village Arts School

At the Milan Village Arts School, students of all ages gather to take folk art classes in a wide variety of offerings from watercolor painting to artisan bread-baking to Norwegian traditional knife-making!

The Prairie Arts Center

Home to the Lac qui Parle Players and a wide range of performances in this church-turned-theater. A highlight of each year is a locally-produced holiday show, “County Christmas” which plays to sold-out audiences every year.

Dawson-Boyd Arts Association

At Memorial Auditorium in Dawson, performances are sponsored by Dawson-Boyd Arts Association nearly once a month – dance, music, theater – all quality events at affordable ticket prices!​

Montevideo Arts Project

This volunteer, community based organization aims to increase the use of public art in our community. They’ve installed four pieces of public art in Montevideo – plan an outing to view them all!

The Granite Area Arts Council

Granite Area Arts Council (GAAC) has monthly exhibits at the KK Berge Gallery, larger performance events throughout the year, and a summer art camp for both kids and adults.

Appleton's 52 Wing Auditorium

Appleton’s ’52 Wing Auditorium presents several concerts throughout the year. Come summer, catch one of the eight Tuesday evening outdoor concerts in the Riverside Park. 

Live Music

Find live music all throughout the Prairie Waters Region all year-round. From summer concert series in Appleton and Canby, to open mic night in Granite Falls – you can’t go wrong!

Culture & History

Tucked amongst the fields and prairie you’ll find communities rich in culture and heritage and classic buildings listed on the National Register. Home to local festivals and museums, U.S.-Dakota War sites, local museums chock full of rural artifacts and stories, the Fagen Fighters World War II Museum, and some of Minnesota’s renowned authors and artists; the land is a true reflection of its rich history.
